Microfinance

Around the world there are people who have opportunities to have businesses but for poor people these opportunities are minimum; however, microfinance is a social help for this kind of people.

According to Wikipedia the meaning of microfinance “is the provision of financial services to low-income clients, including consumers and the self-employed, who traditionally lack access to banking and related services.” That means that microfinance helps people who cannot apply for a loan in a bank because they do not have much money.

Usually, this kind of people do not have any type of general school education, but they want to be successful in life. For this reason, microfinance gives economic support to people who want to work, but due to lack of studies or low social class, they do not have the same opportunities that other people do.

According to Wikipedia the objective of microfinance is “a world in which as many poor and near-poor households as possible have permanent access to an appropriate range of high quality financial services, including not just credit but also savings, insurance, and fund transfers. Those who promote microfinance generally believe that such access will help poor people out of poverty.”

The objective of microfinance is so clear; they want to give people a better economic class, but not only money. Microfinance gives people a kind of guaranties if people who lent money die. This is so important because everybody has to die in some moment but for people who have a stable job it is easier to save money for their children or their family than to poor people.

In Costa Rica, there are some companies which give money to people who want to have their own cottage industry, but those companies work a little bit different that microfinance because they are a kind of bank; they provide loans to people with higher interests.

Actually, Costa Rican poor people cannot ask for a loan in these companies because the interests are so high, although these businesses help people to have a better economic life because they give the basic economic support to people to have their cottage industry.

In Costa Rica there is also a kind of study help. INA is a public company who works for free. People can go there and take any kind of free classes. When people finish the courses, they get a degree which is certified and then they can work and earn money.

Our country does not have exactly a microfinance help, but it has other kinds of help like study companies and businesses which lend money to people, so there are advantages for us.

Mozart effect video

The Mozart Effect

When researchers started analyzing all the benefits of music in people´s life, they could discover that listening to music has a good impact in some people. That affirmation is supported by the Mozart effect, but this study is focused on little children according to the experiments done before.

It is very interesting to think about another type of applications because a lot of people feel stimulated when they listen to music, so for me it is maybe good to know if that research applies for university students.

It is interesting to see that most of the people in the universities use earphones to listen to music when they are studying, I could see that people who listen to music get more concentrated than people who do not have earphones. The fact is that they feel relaxed listening to their favorite music.

Not all the people have the same reaction when they listen to music in their study time because I could discover that there are people who feel very stressed when they listen to music in their study time, so they cannot do anything with the melodies hanging around their minds. The fact is that there are different types of reactions when people listen to music.

Mozart´s music provides different kind of results, so it could be a good idea if our university provides us some major lessons with music; it is just to see how it works in students.

I think that a good reason to use music relaxation is because of the level of stress in the environment. Our universities can implement a little break of five minutes to apply this technique, so maybe it could be a motivation for students. Probably as a consequence of that, it would increase the level of attention in classes because in Costa Rica most of the general education is so bad since it is repetitive.

Usually our normal process of education is attending class students some important knowledge, but the problem is the kind of subject or how long that class lasts because our body has a limit, that it is not necessary physical; it is a mental limit.

The problem is that we only feel stressed when we have a difficult exam and in the end of some subject, so the stress could turn in a bad illness. If we had the tools like music relaxation, to avoid these negative effects, we could enjoy our classes and take more advantage of them.

GOES
ULACIT

Dear GOES:

I would like to tell you that the activities that you planned were amazing, because English student people can practice what we have learned during the learning process which we are.

You not only planned the activities that we saw, you also participate in them. The debates that you managed were interesting because we could learn more words. Besides that, it is different to hear speaking English some people like our age than other people older than us.
The order that you implemented during the debates were right because we had to say what we thought with respect during our two minutes turn.
We had the opportunity to plan and presented an English activity during that week. We called to our activity “Who wants to eat”. Almost our entire English group participated during the presentation, and all of us did the questions.
The idea was proposal by Javier Diaz, one of our classmates, his idea was amazing and we choose it to be presented on July〖21〗^th. We wanted to do something similar like the T.V show program, it stands in Spanish, “Quien quiere ser millonario” and it stands in English “Who wants to be millionaire”. In the real T.V show program people who participate win money but, like we do not have much money we decided to give to the winner participants some food prizes.
We had three participants and they won some delicious food prizes.
As an English group we were glad to have presented that activity because we were the only group who did something different and something which people could win something to eat. We were also exciting because our teacher Krissia Cantillano Prado enthusiasmed us.

Costa Rican Red Cross video

The Red Cross

Red Cross

The Red Cross is a committee which helps hurt people because of accidents. People can call the Red Cross in a specific number 911 and then the paramedics would arrive to the place where the accident happened. In Costa Rica, there are many branches of the Red Cross in all provinces.

I did some research about the Red Cross and I found a page which describes all the purposes, the movement, the history and what the Red Cross does.

The history of the Red Cross started when it was founded in 1919 as the International Federation, composed by 186 members of the Red Cross and Red Crescent societies. It had a “Secretariat in Geneva and more than 60 delegations strategically located to support activities around the world.” The Red Cross groups have grown a lot.

The Red Cross´s vision and mission say that they help people “without any kind of discrimination like nationality, race, religious beliefs, social class or political opinions.” It is important because societies need associations that help people no matter their skin color, religion or political opinions; especially into the war world.

The Red Cross and the Red Crescent have five zone offices around the world. The zone offices are located in Africa, Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, Europe and America. There is at least one Red Cross branch in each continent.

The Red Cross has seven principal values: humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality.

Humanity is the main value of the Red Cross because people who work to help other people need to feel the pain that other people feel. Impartiality and neutrality are similar to each other and they are important because the Red Cross does not care what kind of religion or skin color the hurt people have. Independence means that the Red Cross does not have to say anything to anybody or any association; the Red Cross only helps others. The Red Cross is characterized by their voluntary service because that is its main objective.

Although the Red Cross is independent they also have unity because there are many zone offices of the Red Cross around the world, and their objective is the same everywhere: to help hurt people.

For all these reasons, they have universality. First of all because they have many offices around the world, and besides because they help hurt people without looking at their appearance.

Innovation Week

March 31, 2010

Dear organizer of the: Innovation Week:

I want to tell you that the activities during this week were amazing because nowadays people are interested in the world of technology and intelligent environments. I had the opportunity to attend some of the activities presented, and from my point of view the success of them depended on lecturer gave the speech.

I am going to talk about some speeches. One of them was given by Ms Silvia Castro; the main topic was about neuroscience. She gave us many important information for me because I love everything related to psychology. She said that nowadays people can learn more than before because they have more interaction and opportunity to know everything around them. Besides that, the way that she presented the topic was great because she had interaction with the public so she made this activity entertaining.

The other activity that I went to was about informatics, and it was presented by Alvaro de la Osa. He had a traditional way to present the speech; it was a little bit boring for me. Besides that, I do not have knowledge about this major at the university nor math formulas related to this topic.

I hope that you could understand my ideas, thanks for reading my letter.

Privacy

Can employers read their employees´emails?

Nowadays technology helps employees to keep eye on employees. Employers want to be sure that their employees are doing a good job; for that reason, there are many conflicts because employees ask for their privacy rights. The question that people ask themselves is what happens if employees are not watched by their employers?

Everything started many years ago, when people who worked for any company made phone calls during their working day so the bills started to be higher. Also, the employees started to talk to anyone while they were in their working day.

Then, technologic devices were created. Some examples are: cameras, special tape recorders to record employees´ phone calls and special software to let employers know what their employees are talking about and doing in their emails and networks. The main problem for the employees started when their employers decided to buy these devices to watch almost all employees’ movements.

This topic is very controversial because if people are employees, they do not want to be watched by their employers, but if people are employers they want to be sure that their employees do a good job during the working day and also during their extra hours. Nowadays, many laws have been created to protect people, especially laws that protect employees. But, there are many cases of lazy people during working hour, people who want to be in the net talking with others.
So, almost all the people conclude that it is a good idea that employers have cameras in their business to be sure that employees do a good job.
On the other hand, there are extremes and it is not fair that innocent people are watched, followed, and recorded all their movements.
For employers it is easier to know when they can trust someone or when they cannot.

There is another solution for this problem; I am going to give you a real example. Some companies let their employees make any phone calls but, if the employee spends more than four minutes his or her boss calls him or her to know what happens, and, if the employee talks more than four minutes the phone call is recorded.
Today we are full of technology, so we have to be aware wherever we go, we are going to be watched.

Monasticism

Monasticism is a specific way of life. Monastics choose to live in a place which has many strict rules. When people decide to have a monastic life, they know that they have to leave back their families and their lives practically.

The first meaning for the word monastic comes from "dwelling alone", as it is said in an article of New Advent Encyclopedia page, related to monasticism. The word comes from the Greek monos.

“Dwelling along” means that people who decide to become religious people have to leave their usual life behind because the monastic life implies rules that they have to abide. Monastic people have to pray almost all day and they cannot see their families nor their partners.

Monastic women are known as nuns or sisters and men are called monks and brothers, but not all of the nuns or monks have to live in a monastic center. In monasticism people have a strict life because they have to get up before three a.m. and go to sleep around ten or eleven p.m. These people pray everyday; besides they work a lot in their monastic houses.

The article mentioned above says that “it would be wrong to say that the earliest Christian asceticism was monastic”. That is because there are no evidence that shows people when the first monastic asceticism started.

People who choose to be the rest of their lives in a place just praying must have vocation because not all of us have been made to be a monk or a nun. Because of this reason, there have been many monks accused of raping others specially children. In the year 2002, there were many monks accused of rape, or homosexuality as it was written on the page Christian Inheritance which has a subject related to sex, aborting, raping and sodomy in Christian Church. In this page there are articles which talk about this topic. There are articles since the year 2001 until the year 2003.

Appearance Trend

Nowadays, teenagers want to make a change about their appearance. They want to be different, but at the same time, they follow some stereotypes. The difference between the present year and some years ago is huge.

Today children are more influenced than before time. This happens because there are more famous people who teenagers and children can follow and actually they do it. Most of these teenagers want to get others´ attention. For this reason, there are more people on the street each day who wear black clothes, or colorful clothes. This behavior can mean that people who want to get others´ attention have a low self esteem or they want to be known.

Some years ago teenagers were classical. I remember, when I was in the school, my male classmates did not have long hair. Today almost all the men in school and high school have long hair. I think that this is happening because of the influence that famous people have: like rock singers and top models.

The first Emo person was Adolf Hitler, and actually, he had a lot of influence in the world. He was a bad person because he killed hundreds of people; nevertheless people followed his way of thinking, his way of wearing and his way of being.

If we see on the street how many Emo people have Emo trend, we will have to count many of this kind of people. They are odd people because they not only wear like if they were depressed, but actually they are.
Generally they have a low self esteem and they have many problems in their houses; I think that for these reasons they wear black clothes and listen to rock music. Besides that they hurt themselves and most of them want to die.

Emo people are a problem in society because they do not give anything to others. They invite other people to be part of their group, and this means that in five or more years the world will be full of Emo people. Consequently, there will be more people with serious problems and probably there will be more drug addicted people.

Self esteem

Self- esteem is how much people love themselves, but there are humans who do not feel that love, and they could hurt themselves. Also, there are people who are dissatisfied because they are always looking for material things, so they are not happy with their lives.

Self esteem is what people think about themselves and how much they love themselves. If people have a good concept about themselves, they will have a high self esteem. On the other hand, if they always think that they do not work to get anything, they will have a very low self esteem.

There are some things that influence the level of value that a person has about himself or herself. First, children are the reflex of their parents, so if adults hurt their children, these little people will feel bad, and, consequently, when children grow up they will probably have a low self esteem. The second point is related to the susceptibility that people have; there are humans who are not affected by what other people say about them, but there are other people that care so much what others think about them.

Nowadays people are shallower than before because there are many famous people in the world, so they want to imitate them. The problem is that some famous people make big mistakes and people still want to be like them. In fact, people provoke accidents like suicides or homicides because they are jealous of other humans. Besides, people are more susceptible to do horrible things because of the bad influence they are exposed to.

Today the number of problems in teenagers is increasing a lot, especially in women. Anorexia is a huge psychological issue in the world. In my opinion, if a woman hurts herself, she does not love her. Actually I do not know how people can hurt themselves, but there are many people who cannot stand the problems that life gives them. And if they have a low self esteem, they will probably find the wrong solution.

People who have a low self esteem are more susceptible to be influenced by this material and stupid world, and nowadays this world has become more popular than never before. People who are influenced by money cannot stop thinking about it and what they can get with it, for example, houses, cars and clothes; they do it to look happy, but they are not.

We have to be happy with all the things that God gives us. Almost all the time we are not satisfied with the way we look or what we have, but we are blessed by Him because we have all that we need to live and ever more. We should accept God´s will, we should also love ourselves a lot.

Is honesty the best policy?

Most of the people learn to lie since they are children. Nowadays, people lie because they think that they are protecting themselves, but it is not true. Do white lies exist?

Today, adults lie in many situations, for example, to get a job or someone´s good impression about them. Children learn to lie because they listen to their parents, who are their masters, lying. So, this is a reason why people lie a lot.
In Costa Rica it is usual that politicians lie when they are in political campaigns because they say that they are going to do something for the country and, then when people choose one of them, this person does not do anything. This is not because they are an example to all the country, so it is easier that children start lying.

It sounds difficult to believe, but there are jobs in which people have to choose lying or not, for example lawyers. If a lawyer has a client who is guilty and he or she knows it, it does not matter because the lawyer has to defend his or her client. Although lying is not an excuse because sometimes people do that horrible act which is lying, and they call it “white lies”.

In my opinion, white lies do not exist. In life we have to be have a stand to: to say a lie or to say the truth. Always we have to try saying the truth although sometimes it is difficult, but it is the best policy.
If we want to have a good behavior, we say the truth like The Bible says. So that is in our hands; it is only making a good decision.

Addictive Personalities

Video Games Addicted People

An addiction is a problem which takes up people. Nowadays, there are more addicted people than before. This happens because people spend time with computers and they go out since they are teenagers. For these reasons, people are more vulnerable to fall over in addictions like drugs, sex, alcohol and more kinds of problems. There exists a “new” addiction which is playing video games. This is happening because people are involved in the high technology world, and nowadays there are many people who are video games addicted. This addiction consists on spending time playing video games. It is known like video game overuse too. People with this disorder have many problems. One of them is that they cannot talk with other people around them, because they are focused only on video games. Besides, they are thinking in finishing the game they are playing. There are many kinds of consoles for people playing video games like: Xbox, Play Station 3 and Nintendo Wii, which are the most modern. Also, there are video games online; in this kind of method people have to pay to get a license. Actually these consoles and methods are used to attract people, and after they starting playing video games, there is a possibility that they make people addicted to them. I know some cases of people who have this problem. My brother is one of them, and I can see how he spends hours playing in front of the television. This addiction is very bad, but there are activities that people can practice like: going out, talking with other people, and trying to play less time. It is sad to see how people waste their life playing a video game which does not give anything to video game players. Although not everybody thinks in this way, we can make a change and try to help these addicted people.

My Autobiograpy

I am from Perez Zeledon, but I am studying Occupational Health in San Jose. I have to live here. I visit every week my beautiful family. I have a brother who is twelve years old, and a sister who is fifteen years old. In Perez Zeledon I live with my siblings and my parents. My father has a workshop and my mother is his secretary. We like to spend time with each other and travel a lot.

I like to be in a peaceful place with a few people. I like to go to the beach, but I do not take the sun because my skin is a little bit dark. I go to the church with my family or my boyfriend usually. I like to stay home because, for me, it does not exist a better place than that.

I do not like to drink alcohol neither to smoke. I do not go to any place where people drink or smoke, like bars. I dislike liars and lazy people.

My goals are many, but the most important is to finish my major. I am starting it, but I hope to finish it with good grades and have knowledge about my profession. For me it is essential to have God in my heart every day because without him I cannot live in the same way as if I have Him with me.

I dream about having my own family in the future. For me it is important to be happy all the time and to be with the correct people; I think that I select my friends carefully. I do not know if it is bad, but I have thought in that way since I was a little girl.

Although we have some time to know us this is a good way to express anything related to the course.
